Veo 3 not generating audio? 7 causes and how to fix them

Veo 3.1 generates sound, so a silent clip has a cause. Google's own prompt guide says to state audio explicitly in separate sentences (Google Cloud, accessed 2026-10-26). Check the app's audio option first, then add dialogue in quotes, an SFX line and an ambient line. If the mode is Add/remove object, no audio exists. Report repeat silence.

This page lists the documented settings and limits that can leave a Veo clip silent, each tied to a Google or platform source, so you can work through them in order.

Why is Veo 3 not generating audio?

Veo 3.1 supports sound, so a silent clip points to a setting, a prompt, a mode or a content rule. These are the checks worth running, in order.

As of 2026-10-26, Google Cloud's model page lists sound generation as supported for Veo 3.1, Veo 3.1 Fast and Veo 3.1 Lite. The same page lists the model IDs veo-3.1-generate-001, veo-3.1-fast-generate-001 and veo-3.1-lite-generate-001. Lite is marked Preview there.

If your API calls fail outright, see the API note below.

Is the audio option switched off?

Check the audio option first: it takes seconds, and Adobe's own support staff point to it.

In February 2026 an Adobe user posted that two generations using Veo 3.1 or Veo 3.1 Fast had no sound. Adobe's community manager replied that both models support audio, but "the audio option needs to be turned on for it to be included." The thread does not confirm what caused that user's silent clips. In Adobe's app, check General next to Duration. On other platforms, check the current audio settings and model documentation before you change the prompt.

Does your Veo 3 prompt ask for sound?

Google's prompt guide tells you to ask for audio outright, so put sound in every prompt. This is a troubleshooting step, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The Google Cloud prompt guide says to "clearly specify if you want audio" and to write audio in its own sentences, not mixed into the picture description. Google's Veo 3.1 prompting guide (16 October 2025) gives three formats:

  • Dialogue: use quotation marks, for example A woman says, "We have to leave now."
  • Sound effects: SFX: thunder cracks in the distance
  • Ambient noise: Ambient noise: the quiet hum of a starship bridge

A prompt that carries all three looks like this (more in AI video prompt examples):

A detective leans over a desk in a dim office. The detective says, "You were highly recommended." SFX: a slow wall clock ticks. Ambient noise: rain against a window.

Keep dialogue short enough to fit the clip: Google's Flow tips say speech is less likely to be generated if the requested dialogue doesn't fit in the 8-second clip.

Which Veo modes do not make audio?

Add/remove object does not generate audio, because Google says it still runs on Veo 2.

Google's Veo 3.1 prompting guide states that add/remove object "currently utilizes the Veo 2 model and does not generate audio." The same guide says ingredients to video now includes audio and that first and last frame video comes "complete with audio." It calls these features experimental and still improving. Google's launch announcement describes scene extension as suited to extending a shot with background audio.

Google's October 2025 guide says Add/remove object used Veo 2 and did not generate audio. Check current support for the specific editing tool you use, and add sound in an editor if the result is silent.

Did an older Veo version cause the silent clip?

Much of the advice online dates from 2025, when audio was limited to some Flow features, and it can send you to the wrong fix.

Google's 10 July 2025 Flow post says Veo 3 already added sound effects and background noise to Frames to Video clips, and that speech arrived that week as an experimental feature. Google's 15 October 2025 announcement said Veo 3.1 brought further audio improvements. Support threads from mid-2025 about silent clips may describe limits that no longer apply. Check the date of every fix you read, and prefer Google's current pages.

Is Veo muting speech because of the content?

Speech is less likely to be generated when a scene involves minors, according to Google's own Flow tips.

Google's Flow tips say speech is less likely if it involves minors. PPC Land's 12 July 2025 report on Google's 10 July announcement listed "muted speech for content depicting minors" among Flow's launch limitations. Flow is open only to users aged 18 and over, and its help page says editing uploaded videos of identifiable minors is not supported in any region.

Can your API call still reach Veo 3.1?

Retired preview IDs prevent generation, so they explain a failed call, not a silent clip. The Veo 3.1 preview model IDs in the Gemini API were shut down on 22 October 2026.

Google's Gemini API page says veo-3.1-generate-preview, veo-3.1-fast-generate-preview and veo-3.1-lite-generate-preview were shut down on that date. It points developers to Gemini Omni Flash (gemini-omni-1.1-flash) or to GA models on Google's enterprise platform. If your code still names a preview ID, fix that before you debug audio. For audio controls, read the parameter reference for your endpoint.

Does your region affect Veo audio?

Google documents no audio-specific region limit, though Flow features vary by country.

Flow's availability page says product features "may vary depending on your country." It lists editing of uploaded videos and Avatars as unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Neither is audio.

How do you add audio in Google Flow?

In Flow, you add audio by describing it in the prompt, or by attaching a voice to an ingredients generation.

Flow's help page says voice references use the Omni Flash model and work "only" with generations that use ingredients. You can preview preset voices and create a custom one from a preset plus a description. For plain Veo clips, sound comes from the prompt. If you already have a silent file, add sound in an editor.

What does a silent retry cost?

On Runway's API, audio roughly doubles the price of a Veo 3.1 clip, so retries add up fast.

Runway's API (checked 2026-10-26) charges $0.01 per credit. For an 8-second clip:

Model Credits per second 8-second clip
Veo 3.1, audio 40 320 credits = $3.20
Veo 3.1, no audio 20 160 credits = $1.60
Veo 3.1 Fast, audio 15 120 credits = $1.20
Veo 3.1 Fast, no audio 10 80 credits = $0.80

If three completed audio-enabled generations are all charged at the listed Runway rate, three 8-second attempts cost $9.60 on Veo 3.1 or $3.60 on Veo 3.1 Fast. Billing and refunds depend on the platform and on whether the generation failed or completed. In Flow, Google's help page says a generation with low-quality audio is not created and the credits are refunded. A completed clip that is silent is a separate case, so report it. For more on cost, see the AI video cost calculator and Veo 3 pricing by route.

What about garbled subtitles in Veo audio?

Veo can add unwanted subtitles to clips with speech.

MIT Technology Review (15 July 2025) reported garbled subtitles on Veo 3 clips even when prompts asked for none. It said a Google spokesperson recommended retrying and sending feedback, and that negative prompts such as "no subtitles" tend to work less well than positive instructions. The report is from 2025, so check whether it still applies to your clips. For other changes in Google's lineup, see Veo 3.1 vs Sora 2, or browse the Learn hub and the Veo and Sora guides.

Questions

Why does my Veo 3 video have no sound?

Check these documented settings and limits in order: the app's audio option, explicit sound cues in the prompt, a mode that does not make audio, and content Google mutes. If audio was on and the clip is still silent, report it to the platform.

How do I add audio to a Google Flow video?

Describe the sound in the prompt and generate again, with dialogue short enough to fit the 8-second clip. Flow's help page says voice references work only for generations that use ingredients, and they use the Omni Flash model. For an existing silent clip, add sound in a video editor.

Does Veo 3.1 Fast have audio?

Yes. Google Cloud lists sound generation as supported for Veo 3.1, 3.1 Fast and 3.1 Lite. Runway's API also sells Veo 3.1 Fast with and without audio, at 15 and 10 credits per second.

Do I lose credits when a Veo clip comes out silent?

In Flow, no: Google's help page says that when Veo produces low-quality audio the video is not created and your credits are refunded. A completed clip that is silent is a different case. One Adobe user reported spending credits on two silent clips from Veo 3.1 or 3.1 Fast, and Adobe's community manager asked them to report it.
